Description

Delight in these Vegan Matcha Black Sesame Cinnamon Rolls, a unique fusion dessert combining the earthy flavors of matcha and nutty black sesame with the warmth of cinnamon. Crafted with plant-based ingredients, these soft, fluffy rolls offer a perfect dairy-free treat, featuring a creamy glaze drizzled over golden baked rolls.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • ¾ cup warm almond milk
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup coconut oil (melted)
  • ¼ tsp salt

Filling

  • 2 tbsp matcha powder
  • ½ cup black sesame paste
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp melted coconut oil
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tbsp almond milk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm almond milk and granulated sugar, then sprinkle the active dry yeast on top. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is activated.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Add the melted coconut oil, all-purpose flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix thoroughly and knead the dough on a clean surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise: Place the dough back into the bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  4. Roll Out the Dough: On a floured surface, roll the risen dough into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick, preparing it for the filling spread.
  5. Make and Spread Filling: Mix black sesame paste, melted coconut oil, brown sugar, matcha powder, and ground cinnamon until combined into a spreadable paste. Evenly spread this mixture over the rolled-out dough.
  6. Form Rolls: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Use a sharp knife to cut the log into 10–12 even rolls.
  7. Second Rise: Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover them, and let them rise for an additional 30 minutes in a warm spot.
  8. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes until they turn golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Prepare Glaze: While the rolls bake, whisk powdered sugar, almond milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl to create a smooth glaze.
  10. Glaze and Serve: Drizzle the glaze over the warm baked rolls just before serving to add sweetness and a delicate finish.

Notes

  • You can substitute black sesame paste with tahini mixed with a little maple syrup for a different but delicious flavor.
  • For a stronger matcha flavor, increase the amount of matcha powder slightly in the filling.
  • These rolls are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
