Ingredients
Scale
Potatoes and Garlic
- 3 pounds russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 6 cloves garlic, peeled
Dairy and Seasonings
- 1 cup whole milk or half-and-half, warmed
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- ½ cup sour cream
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Garnish (Optional)
- Chopped chives or parsley
Instructions
- Prepare Potatoes and Garlic: Place the peeled and chunked potatoes along with the peeled garlic cloves into a large pot, then cover them with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt to the water to season the potatoes as they cook.
- Cook Potatoes and Garlic: Bring the pot to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender enough to be easily pierced with a fork.
- Drain and Mash: Drain the potatoes and garlic thoroughly and return them to the pot. Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to mash the potatoes and garlic together until reaching your desired smoothness.
- Add Dairy and Season: Stir in the warmed milk, softened butter, and sour cream to the mashed potatoes until the mixture is creamy and well combined. Season with salt and black pepper to your taste preferences.
- Garnish and Serve: Optionally garnish with chopped chives or parsley for a fresh visual and flavor boost. Serve the garlic mashed potatoes warm alongside your favorite main dishes.
Notes
- For extra richness, substitute heavy cream for the milk or half-and-half.
- Roasting the garlic before adding it to the potatoes deepens the garlic flavor for a more savory taste.
- These mashed potatoes pair exceptionally well with steak, roast chicken, or as a comforting holiday side dish.
