Description

A hearty and flavorful Mushroom Ground Beef skillet made with sautéed mushrooms, onions, garlic, and ground beef, seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, herbs, and spices. This easy stovetop recipe is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner and pairs well with rice, mashed potatoes, or tacos.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 8 ounces cremini or white mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup beef broth or water
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat to prepare for sautéing the vegetables.
  2. Sauté onion: Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 3 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning.
  3. Add garlic: Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant, taking care not to burn it.
  4. Cook mushrooms: Add the finely chopped mushrooms and cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they release their moisture and begin to brown.
  5. Brown the beef: Push the vegetables to the side of the skillet and add the ground beef. Cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it up as it cooks to ensure even browning.
  6. Combine ingredients: Mix the cooked mushrooms and onions back into the beef, stirring to combine everything evenly.
  7. Season: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, smoked paprika (if using), dried thyme, and tomato paste. Mix thoroughly to coat all ingredients with the seasonings.
  8. Simmer: Add the beef broth or water and simmer for 2 to 3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the mixture to thicken slightly.
  9. Adjust seasoning and garnish: Taste and adjust seasoning if needed, then garnish with chopped parsley before serving if desired.

Notes

  • This mushroom ground beef mixture is delicious served over rice, mashed potatoes, or as a filling for tacos.
  • For a lower-fat version, substitute lean ground beef or use ground turkey instead.
  • Feel free to add extra vegetables like spinach or bell peppers for additional nutrients and flavor.
