Description

Delight in these homemade Twix Bars featuring a buttery shortbread base, a rich caramel layer, and a smooth chocolate topping. Perfectly balanced between crunchy and chewy textures, these bars are a satisfying treat that you can make entirely from scratch in under two hours.

Ingredients

Scale

Shortbread Base

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

Caramel Layer

  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Chocolate Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups milk chocolate chips (or dark chocolate, if preferred)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Shortbread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper, making sure to leave extra hanging over the sides to easily lift the bars later.
  2. Make the Shortbread Base: In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, and softened butter. Mix until a crumbly dough forms. Press this dough evenly into the prepared pan. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until the edges turn lightly golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
  3. Prepare the Caramel Layer: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, unsalted butter, and light corn syrup. Stir continuously for 8-10 minutes until the mixture thickens and achieves a golden caramel color. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Add Caramel Layer: Pour the hot caramel evenly over the cooled shortbread base. Spread gently with a spatula to cover the entire surface. Let the caramel set at room temperature for 20-30 minutes until firm to the touch.
  5. Melt the Chocolate: Place the chocolate chips and vegetable oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring thoroughly between each session, until the chocolate is fully melted and smooth.
  6. Add Chocolate Layer: Pour the melted chocolate over the set caramel layer. Spread evenly with a spatula to create a smooth top layer. Allow the chocolate to set at room temperature or refrigerate until firm.
  7. Slice and Serve: Once the chocolate layer is firm, use the parchment paper overhang to lift the entire block from the pan. Place on a cutting board and slice into 16 bars. Enjoy your homemade Twix bars!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.
  • Ensure the shortbread base is completely cool before adding the caramel to prevent melting.
  • You can store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • To make slicing easier, chill the bars fully before cutting.
