Description
Create spooky Halloween Icky Intestines using stuffed crescent rolls filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, marinara sauce, and melted mozzarella cheese. Perfect as a creepy appetizer for Halloween parties, these twisted and baked treats are fun to make and even more fun to eat!
Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 2 cans refrigerated crescent roll dough
Filling
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup marinara sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper to taste
Other
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Red food coloring (optional, for extra “bloody” effect)
- Cooking spray or parchment paper
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set the oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or spraying it lightly with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Cook the filling: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef with diced onion and minced garlic until fully cooked and no longer pink. Drain excess fat to keep the filling moist but not greasy.
- Combine filling ingredients: Stir in the marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese, Italian seasoning, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool slightly to make it easier to handle.
- Prepare dough strips: Unroll the crescent roll dough and pinch together the seams to create one large rectangle. Cut the dough into long strips approximately 2 inches wide.
- Assemble intestines: Spoon a generous line of the cooled filling down the center of each dough strip, then fold the dough over the filling and pinch the edges securely to seal. Twist and shape each filled strip into a squiggly, irregular “intestine” form and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Add finishing touches: Brush each dough intestine with beaten egg to give a golden sheen after baking. Optionally, dab small amounts of red food coloring on top to mimic a bloody, icky appearance for extra Halloween effect.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
- Cool and serve: Let the intestines cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving to ensure the filling sets and they are safe to eat.
Notes
- Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian version.
- Add chopped mushrooms or spinach into the filling for added texture and nutrition.
- Serve with warm marinara sauce on the side for dipping to enhance the spooky, gory effect.
