Description

These Green Velvet Brownies with Cream Cheese Frosting are a festive and delicious twist on classic brownies. Featuring a vibrant green hue achieved with liquid food coloring and a rich, creamy cream cheese frosting, these brownies are perfect for celebrations or any time you want a fun dessert with a moist chocolate base and tangy topping.

Ingredients

Scale

Brownies

  • ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 (1-oz) bottle green liquid food coloring
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • â…› tsp salt

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 1 (8-oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • 3 Tbsp butter, softened
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • â…› tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line the bottom and sides of a 9-inch square pan with aluminum foil, allowing 2 to 3 inches of foil to hang over the sides for easy lifting. Lightly grease the foil to prevent sticking.
  2. Melt Chocolate and Butter: In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips and butter. Microwave on HIGH for 1½ to 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds until the mixture is melted and smooth.
  3. Mix Wet and Dry Ingredients: Whisk the sugar into the melted chocolate mixture until combined. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking each just until blended. Gently fold in the all-purpose flour, green food coloring, baking powder, vanilla extract, and salt until evenly combined.
  4. Bake the Brownies: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 44 to 48 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Remove from oven and cool completely on a wire rack, about 2 hours.
  5. Make the Frosting: Using an electric mixer at medium speed, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar and salt, beating until smooth and blended. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  6. Finish and Serve: Lift the cooled brownies from the pan using the foil overhang. Remove the foil gently, spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the top of the brownies, then cut into 16 squares. Optionally garnish before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the cream cheese and butter for the frosting are softened to room temperature for smooth mixing.
  • The green liquid food coloring gives a vibrant velvety color; adjust the quantity if a deeper or lighter green is desired.
  • Microwaving chocolate in intervals prevents burning; stir frequently as directed.
  • Cooling the brownies completely before frosting helps the frosting to spread smoothly and prevents melting.
  • Store any leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
