Ingredients
Scale
Oatmeal Base
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 2 cups milk (or water for a lighter version)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- Pinch of salt
Caramelized Apples
- 1 large apple, sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work well)
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Toppings
- 1/4 cup walnuts, toasted (optional)
- Extra cinnamon for dusting
- Drizzle of maple syrup or honey (optional)
Instructions
- Cook the Oatmeal: In a medium saucepan, bring the milk or water to a boil over medium heat to prepare the base of your oatmeal.
- Combine Ingredients: Stir in the rolled oats, ground cinnamon, maple syrup or honey, vanilla extract if using, and a pinch of salt into the boiling liquid.
- Simmer: Reduce heat to low and let the oatmeal simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes until it thickens to a creamy consistency. Remove from heat.
- Caramelize the Apples: While the oatmeal cooks, melt butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced apples, brown sugar, and cinnamon, cooking for 4-5 minutes until apples are soft and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
- Toast the Walnuts (Optional): In a dry skillet over medium heat, toast the walnuts for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and golden, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Assemble: Divide the cooked oatmeal evenly into bowls.
- Add Toppings: Top each bowl with the caramelized apples and toasted walnuts.
- Finish: Drizzle additional maple syrup or honey if desired and sprinkle with extra cinnamon for an extra flavor boost.
Notes
- Use milk for creamier oatmeal or water for a lighter option.
- Choose tart apples like Granny Smith for a balance of sweetness and tang.
- Toasted walnuts add extra crunch and flavor but can be omitted for nut allergies.
- Vanilla extract is optional but enhances the overall aroma.
- Maple syrup or honey can be adjusted according to desired sweetness.
