Description

This Chopped Italian Sandwich is a deliciously hearty and fresh meal featuring a variety of Italian cold cuts, cheeses, and crisp vegetables mixed with zesty Italian dressing. Perfect for a quick lunch or picnic, this sandwich offers a flavorful combination of textures and tastes wrapped in a crusty baguette or hoagie roll.

Ingredients

Scale

Sandwich Base

  • 1 baguette or Italian hoagie roll (or 4 small sub rolls)

Meats and Cheeses

  • 1/4 lb salami, sliced
  • 1/4 lb pepperoni, sliced
  • 1/4 lb deli ham, sliced
  • 1/4 lb provolone cheese, sliced
  • 1/4 lb mozzarella cheese, sliced

Vegetables & Add-ins

  • 1/4 cup red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup banana peppers or peperoncini, sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh romaine lettuce, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cherry tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive tapenade or roasted red peppers (optional)

Dressing & Seasoning

  • 3 tablespoons Italian dressing (store-bought or homemade)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sandwich Ingredients: Slice the baguette or hoagie rolls in half lengthwise, leaving one side intact if you prefer the traditional sub style. If using smaller rolls, slice them into individual sandwich-sized pieces. Set aside.
  2. Chop the Meats and Cheeses: Chop the salami, pepperoni, ham, provolone, and mozzarella into small, bite-sized pieces. Combine all the chopped meats and cheeses in a large bowl.
  3. Add the Vegetables: Add the chopped red onion, banana peppers, lettuce, and cherry tomatoes into the bowl with meats and cheeses. Toss everything together until evenly mixed.
  4. Dress the Sandwich: Drizzle the Italian dressing over the mixture and toss again to coat all ingredients evenly. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread olive tapenade or roasted red peppers (if using) on the inside of the rolls. Then, spoon the chopped meat, cheese, and vegetable mixture into the sandwich rolls. Drizzle with olive oil if desired for extra flavor.
  6. Serve: Close the sandwich and serve immediately, or wrap tightly in parchment paper for a picnic or lunch on the go.

Notes

  • Use fresh, high-quality deli meats and cheeses for the best flavor.
  • The olive tapenade or roasted red peppers add a nice burst of flavor but are optional.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the meats and add more cheese and veggies.
  • Adjust the quantity of Italian dressing based on your preference for moisture and tang.
  • Chopping the ingredients finely helps blend the flavors throughout each bite.
  • Serve promptly to keep the bread from becoming soggy or wrap tightly for later consumption.
